Phelps made her debut on the 11th. “The attendance was not good, probably owing to the very bad support the lady received from the company. . . . Phelps was very unfortunate in the selection of the pieces in which she appeared, particularly that of the ‘Wild Irish Girl,’ which she should immediately strike from her repertoire. . . . Her style is free, natural and full of spirit. Her brogue is about the best we have ever heard. Her Scotch dialect is also very fine and she sings with great taste.”
