“Mrs. Fox, née Miss Mary Geilie, gave a concert at this hall last night. The attendance was good, and the programme, consisting of selections from … was rendered in a creditable manner.”
“At the concert of Mrs. Fox, formerly Miss Mary Geilie, on Wednesday night at Irving Hall, a good impression was made by the beneficiary in a duet of Campagna [sic] with Mr. George Simpson. Mrs. Fox has a contralto more full and singular in its depth than in any other respect, and in concerted music is heard with favor. Mr. Simpson’s tenor, albeit wanting mellowness, is one of the very best resident voices we have, and excels in the same particular. Signor Randolfi, the new high baritone, again won an evening’s success by singing Di Provenza with freedom and fervor. He is prepossessing both in countenance and in voice, and we hope will prove intelligent enough to lay broadly the basis of a metropolitan reputation.”
“Mrs. Fox (Miss Mary Gallee [sic], of concert distinction,) gave her ‘first grand’ (fascinating and fatal term, denoting conventionality of overpowering kind) on Wednesday. Mrs. Fox’s pure tones and natural expression were more remarked in the song ‘Thou Everywhere’ than in any of the operatic pieces which she sung. Mr. Simpson also gave delight in one of those English ballads which he sings so much better than anything else.”
