Review: New York Herald, 31 May 1867, 3.

“The burly Birch, the melodious Wambold, the sedate Bernard and the comic Backus still draw like a quadruple magnet, a patent corkscrew or a double team on a racing day.  The imperial Japanese troupe, imported expressly from No. 585 Broadway, the African ballet and the Firing Scud, are still on the boards and will be as long as their patrons are capable of a laugh.  The trouble commences at eight.  The ‘cheerful burlesques’ immediately follow.”
