“As usual, Kelly & Leon’s Mintrels drew together a large house last evening, and the singing, dancing, burlesques and joking were all highly applauded, and served to keep a crowded audience in good humor during the entire performance and to send them away well satisfied with the entertainment at its close.  It is saying a great deal of a negro minstrel band to give them credit for originality, and this mood of praise we can well award to the Kelly & Leon troupe.  The singing is of a superior quality, the choruses are excellent, and the wit is altogether better than the average run in such performances. Saucy Sal is an evening’s amusement of herself. There is a gratifying absence of broad jokes and vulgarities in the whole entertainment that entitles it to especial accommodation, and a spare evening cannot be more amusingly spent than with the Kelly & Leon band.”

“Kelley and Leon’s Minstrels are now giving a very clever entertainment. What with burlesques well rendered, plaintive ballads, Ethiopian eccentricities, fun without vulgarity, and all that, no one need fear going to sleep at their hall.”
