“Dr. Cheever’s old church in Union Square is now the scene of Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress, and gives the best spectacle in the religious line, that the Metropolis has ever seen. Each scene in the panorama is painted by an artist, and is accompanied by some excellent music and choruses. The finale is a grand transformation scene à la Black Crook, and is a very consoling insight into the region beyond the grave where all good Christians are supposed to go. . . .  There is plenty of food for reflection in the journey, and it may serve to wean his [a sinful Gothamite] mind from the seduction of Vanity Fair, Black Crook, Devil’s Auction, Beezlebub or Apollyon.”
