“It has been stated, we believe, that this is to be the last season of Mr. Bryant in white comedy, and that he will return in the Fall to Ethiopian farce. The applause of his audience last evening, however, sounded like a protest against his going back to burnt cork. Well, this is the era of emancipation. All the negroes are free to come and go, and the pioneer of darkies having left the old plantation so long and come into the whitewashing business in another sphere, he might as well stick to it. About such pieces as those in which Mr. Bryant has secured his most favorable receptions, nothing new is to be said, and they may be permitted to run their race and die unmartyred. The people who are most enthusiastic in their support never read the papers, and take their opinions of the drama from what Mrs. Maginnis, who went to see Barney Williams, or Mickey Magee, who went to see Florence, say about the matter. To banish a particular style of entertainment, we must appeal to the people that go to witness it, and not to the readers, who would not pay a cent to see the best Irish drama or the best Irish actor living. Some changes are observable in the company at Wallack’s organized for the Summer campaign. Mr. Frederick Robinson leaves the theatre altogether, and many of his companions retire until the Fall. Mrs. Wm. Winter has been added to the galaxy which is retained.”
“The dramatic event of last evening was the return of Mr. Dan Bryant to Wallack’s which was greeted by a large audience.” Music not mentioned.
