“This well known place of amusement enjoys a degree of popularity in keeping with the ample and varied programme of entertainment nightly furnished its numerous patrons.  Last night an excellent bill was furnished with an overflowing house, commencing with a most unexceptional minstrel olio, interspersed with ballads, comic and sentimental, to suit the tastes of the most exacting.  A burlesque on the great prize fight between McCoole [sic] and Jones followed, in which Fatty Stewart and Charley Pettengill ‘set to’ in most lively and ludicrous style, to the immense satisfaction of the audience.  The classic groupings by a corps of artists noted for their grace and beauty succeeded, and the evening’s entertainment concluded with a new local sketch, written expressly for the establishment, entitled The Three Fast Girls, or Life in New York.  The female minstrel scene in the last piece was a gem in its way and was heartily applauded.”

“Bobby Newcombe, better known as Bobby Hughes, Ethiopian performer, who went to England some years ago with the Rumsey and Newcomb party, but who at present is performing at Butler’s American Theatre, was married on the morning of Sept. 28th, to Mary Blake, the popular danseuse of the American.”
