“This favorite house is nightly crammed with an enthusiastic audience and its old prestige maintained at its accustomed height.  Light as are the theatrical and musical trifles which it offers as the pabulum of pleasure, slender and unsubstantial as is the basis which they offer for a permanent reputation, they are executed with a finish and care which have already secured the cheerful support of a discerning public, and placed the illustrious quartet, Birch, Wambold, Bernard and Backus, in the front rank of the particular branch of the Thespian vocation to which they have devoted themselves.  The present programme is unusually attractive.  The solo and chorus singing in the first part of the performance is rendered with exquisite taste, and is agreeably interspersed with a running fire of sparkling and original witticisms, among which the hits at the Excise law are especially deserving of notice.  The clog dancing is extremely good, and the Coney Island Fisherman merit fully the applause they receive.  The entertainment closes with a little farce Hilton House School, in which the lively Birch and the droll Backus, ably supported by the other risible stars of the company, disport themselves in a manner which provokes the mirthful feelings of the audience in a positively painful degree.”
