The performance was sold out. The comedians were excellent as usual. Other comedians could learn from them. The last piece, an operetta by Suppe, pleased the ear with a much better score than usual by Suppe. The highlights were the song sung by the role of ‘Wixir Fleck’ with chorus, the ‘knocking song”, which is a parody of other operas, the song of the stingy man Geier, and the duet “John take care, keep behind me”. The musical arrangement of these pieces is good and the comical situations were very entertaining. The role of “Wixir” is one of the best of Jean Piccolo. A splendid character portrait of the stingy man “Geier” was created by Jean Petit. His song “Was der Mensch auf Gottes Erden erwirbt” was enthusiatically applauded. The stage scenery was impressive. The backdrop depicted a view of [the German town] Heidelberg painted by Mr. Stöckl, and the costumes for the students showed the elaborateness that was missing on this stage for quite some time. We are convinced that the operetta will be performed for a long time to come.
