“One of the most popular pieces of the German language was produced last night at this theatre, and was deservedly received with enthusiasm. It was ‘Die Machinenbauer,[’] by Weirauch, which abounds with songs and dances just suited to excite a hearty laugh and afford a pleasant evening’s entertainment. One medley chorus, closing with the celebrated Liberty chorus from Fidelio was particularly well executed, and well merited the hearty applause accorded to it. The cast was very large. Among the most prominent characters was Edward Thompson, a young American, impersonated by Mr. Fritze, who rendered it well, with the exception that he occasionally forgot the English accents necessary to render it comic. Mr. Hübsch sang several songs, in which he was encored, and the same compliment was paid to Madame Zerboni, who sang a medley very fairly, although her voice is not sufficiently powerful to fill the theatre.”
