“The variety company now performing at Butler's American Theatre is as good in every respect as has been seen on Broadway for a long time. Each and every department is represented by some of the best and most versatile performers in their line; and, notwithstanding all the theatres except Niblo's are doing a poor business, Butler's is well attended, and, several evenings last week, was crowded. Hughey Dougherty is one of the best general performers that can be found in this country, and George Coes is another versatile performer. In general olio business he is good, and he can play a good banjo solo and sing a ballad with considerable taste. Johnny Queen’s two acts of ‘My Father Sould Charcoal’ and the ‘Broadway Dancing Master’ are very taking with the audience. The ballet is a most excellent one, and embraces some capital dancers. George Edeson’s comic songs are a feature in the entertainment. Charley Gardner commenced an engagement last week, appearing as 'Hop Light Loo' and 'George the Masher'. On June 27 Henry D. Guion, late of Barnum’s Museum, joined the forces and appeared as 'The Spectre Bridegroom'.”
