Ein Kleiner Schwindel commenced and closed last evening’s entertainment, for before the curtain rose Mr. Lohmann appeared at the footlights and announced that Mr. Ascher had suddenly ‘made himself scarce,’ that is to say, had broken his engagement and run away, leaving the manager in the lurch. The curtain then rose, and Die Wiener in Berlin was given, in which Mr. Riedel substituted Mr. Ascher as Eryen in a very creditable manner, considering the short time he had for preparation. Luckily Mr. Lohmann’s fine voice was sufficiently strong to drown the opening chorus, as it was evident to the cognoscenti that there was not much melody in their vocalization. The piece was, however, very fairly given, and was followed by Der Copist, upon which we commented when it was last given. The second edition of Ein Kleiner Schwindel – that by Weihrauch, which met with so much approbation on former occasions – closed the entertainment.”
