“An organ exhibition and sacred concert took place last evening at the Allen street Presbyterian church. The programme comprised several sacred pieces for the organ, vocal quartettes by Mendelssohn, Flotow, and Hillard, and a few solos. The last formed the better part of the entertainment. Mr. Frederick Steins, to whose splendid bass voice allusion has frequently been made in these columns, gave Knight’s ‘Rocked in the Cradle of the Deep,’ with the breadth of expression that characterizes all his renderings. Mr. Jules G. Lumbard, whose choice of songs was rather singular, also evidenced the possession of a powerful and well cultivated voice, and was encored as persistently as was Mrs. Steins. Miss Ella Mayer, the soprano, Mr. Wm. Tobias, and Mr. S. P. Warren, the organist, were acceptable in their respective programmes, the vocalists in charge of the quartettes, however, making fearful havoc, and one of the delinquents literally butchering his part of the ‘Good Night’ quatuor. Mr. A. A. Weeks acted as conductor. The concert was a pecuniary success.”
