“To Philharm. Rehearsal . . . The Pastoral Symph. delightful—its first movement especially. There is a long passage in that movement, just at the close of its (twice repeated) ‘first chapter,’ that suggests to me the sensation of a drive through a pleasant country with a lively party. One little phrase (of five notes) over and over again, in several keys, makes up nearly the whole of it, and seems to hint at the sound or the motion of the carriage wheels. Wonder whether Beethoven meant it? I certainly never saw a painted landscape half so joyous or embodying half so effectively the true feeling of a happy day in the country as does this delicious First Movement. The rest of the Symphony falls short of it.”

“We’re in the full concert season. Friday, in the afternoon, there took place a session of the Philharmonic Society of New-York. The concerts of this Society are very much appreciated, and with reason.—A.L.”
