“Notwithstanding the severity of the storm, the affair proved an immense success. The splendid hall of St. Francis Xavier’s College (connected with the Church) was used for the festival purposes, and, in the evening especially, was crowded with ladies and gentlemen. Dodworth’s Band, sixteen pieces, furnished the music. . . . The amount realized from the festival was between $1,100 and $1,200, which is to be divided equally between the St. Vincent de Paul’s Society and the Ladies’ Benevolent Society attached to the Church, under whose auspices the entire festival was conducted. Numbers of Catholic clergymen and many prominent citizens were present with their families.”
