The grand hall of the Germania Assembly Rooms was completely filled. The performance was very satisfactory. The orchestra under the direction of the NY Stadttheater conductor Neuendorff played pieces and overtures by von Weber, Meyerbeer, Beethoven, and Lumbye with such excellence that one believed he had hired the best musicians of New York. Of the soloists, Miss Ziegler of the Liederkranz stood out with her tasteful performance of Schubert’s “Du bist die Ruh.” All the other soloists were members of the Beethoven Chorus, except for Mr. Urchs. He excelled in Gabussi’s duet “I Pescatori” with his splendid and in the high ranges pleasant sounding baritone voice. Unfortunately the tenor Langenbach suffered from hoarseness, which took away the effectiveness of the duet and other tenor solos. In the duet from the Magic Flute sung by Miss Ziegler and the gentlemen Schwikardi [sic] and Vinisky the last mentioned did not satisfy. The tenor could not live up the powerful bass and the beautiful soprano of the other participants. [This seems to be rather a trio than a duet…]

The men’s choral pieces “Mein” by Härtel, “die Nacht” by Schubert, and “die Ehre Gottes” by Beethoven, the last with orchestra accompaniment, were performed rather well. Also the performance of the challenging piece “Harfner’s Lied” by Zimmermann satisfied. The tenor’s difficult entrances were accurate and even; however, in other vocal ranges some singers dominated too much over others.

All in all, the concert was a big success. The Central Pianoforte Co. offered one of their excellent pianos for the performance.
