“It is difficult to say in the present condition of this piece whether it contains more of very fair ballet or very bad play.”

“On Saturday evening there was no performance of ‘The Devil’s Auction’ at the Academy of Music – the announcement made to the public being that the gas having frozen the management were compelled to close the house.”

“No performance of the ‘Devil’s Auction’ took place at the Academy of Music on the 14th inst., as was announced.  Very few bidders have been found for the attractions offered by the auctioneer the past two weeks.  Manager De Pol has sunk considerable money by his first attempt at American theatrical management, and we hope the next time he tried to cater for the public that he will produce a piece possessed of some little literary merit.  His ballet is the best ever seen in this country, but his dramatic company is very weak.”
