“Fellows of infinite jest are Birch, Wambold, Bernard and Backus, as all New York knows by this time, and some of them are fellows with fine voices too, Wambold for example. One hardly knows whether to admire most their melodies, their jokes or their burlesque ‘Under the Kerosene Lamp,’ for all are so excellent in their way that they attract crowds every night. There are few places of amusement of this character that combine more talent.”

“. . . Mr. Wambold, who of late has not appeared in the olio with a ballad, appeared last week and sang ‘Nora O’neil,’ which was enthusiastically encored, and which he was obliged to repeat. Without doubt Mr. Wambold is one of the sweetest ballad singers in the business. He should, therefore, oblige his patrons by appearing himself, for as good as his funny business may be in his burlesque sketches with Rice, the greater portion of his audiences prefer him in a popular ballad.”
