Safety of Pike’s Opera House.—Dr. E. H. Janes, the Sanitary Inspector, directed by the Superintendent, Dr. Dalton, to examine and report on the condition, as regards safety, of the theatres and other places of amusement in the city, has just made a report on Pike’s Opera House, which is entirely favorable. He concludes by saying that ‘so far as the door, stairways and lobbies are concerned, he thinks the facilities for egress from the building could not be improved. If there exists any obstacle to hasty egress, it appears to be from the want of a sufficient space allotted to the aisles in the parquette and dress circle.’ Directions have just been issued for further inspection of the theatres, with a view to ascertaining the readiness with which large audiences can leave the buildings.”
