“Quite a full house attended Mr. Burnett’s amusing performance at Dodworth Hall last evening, and from their manifestations of approval, the audience appeared to be much pleased therewith. Mr. Burnett is really an excellent humorist, and his facial changes and character personations of Mr. Caudle, in which he is ably assisted by Miss Ellen [sic] Nash, will compare favorably with the immortal Toodles, and was extremely amusing. He also personated the Hard-shell preacher and the Woman’s Rights lecturer with success, and concluded with a series of surprising changes of character and dress in which he successively assumed the part of a Dutchman, Yankee, Frenchman, love-sick sentimentalist, young girl, and other characters with almost magical quickness. Mr. Burnett possesses unusual powers of facial expression, and with a few aids, such as a handkerchief or a pair of spectacles, effects surprising modifications of appearance, and in some cases almost complete alterations. Miss Nash recited a poem with much spirit and felling, and several musical exhibitions were given by Mr. Jesse Shepard, whose combination overture was quite good. His last song was somewhat foreign in its allusions, and might have been replaced by a more familiar selection. Mr. Burnett will remain at Dodworth Hall during the rest of the week, and should be visited by all who like good fun and humor.”
