“This is the last week of the popular tragedienne, Mrs. F. W. Lander, at bijou Broadway. Her engagement, though necessarily brief, has thus far proved successful beyond precedent, and the management deserves to be congratulated for its liberal and judicious catering to the higher toned public taste in presenting us for twenty-eight consecutive nights with a series of the most enjoyable and attractive performances that have of late been vouchsafed to New York playgoers. The only regret experienced is that other engagements, which cannot be cancelled, may so soon deprive us of one who is both an ornament and a credit to her sex and the whole American stage. Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots is now upon the bills, with Mrs. Lander in the title rôle, and is crowding the house every night. The same play will be continued every evening during the week. Mrs. Lander’s impersonation of Mary Stuart, the ill-fated Queen, although not quite so familiar to New Yorkers as her Elizabeth, is nevertheless a grand conception of character, showing deep research and careful study, and is, in fact, another rich jewel added to the diadem on her brilliant historical repertoire.”
Announces Saturday matinee as Lander’s final performance.
“Mrs. Lander, who has been playing at the Broadway Theatre the past three weeks, will close her engagement on the 26th inst. Artistically, her performances have been very successful, but pecuniarily they have not been remunerative. The city is growing so fast in a northwardly direction that the Broadway is now thought to be too far down for first class performances, especially those of a legitimate character.”
