“A concert was given on Thursday evening, Sept. 24, in the Lecture-Room of the Church of St. John the Evangelist [lists those involved]…The concert was exceedingly well attended, and the performances were received with satisfaction and applause. During the evening, Mr. Louis C. Jacoby played compositions for the piano by Beethoven, Liszt, Raff, and one by himself, for the left hand, with precision, force, and expression. Mr. B. Mollenhauer, in his interpretation of ‘La Sylphide,’ for the violin, by E. Mollenhauer, displayed great execution, facility, and promise of future excellence. Miss G. Corbett, with a voice limited in its available compass, sang several simple songs in a dulcet automatical [sic] manner that seemed to afford great pleasure to her friends. Madam A. Kamlah, a soprano of a very different quality, gave Gounod’s ‘Ave Maria’ with much sweetness and feeling. The most notable feature of the performance, however, was her brilliant execution of a florid but beautiful piece by Novello, entitled, ‘Thy Mighty Power,’ with double-bass obligato. It is a novelty in this country, and it was sung on this occasion, with appreciative skill and dramatic expression.”
