The concert was given for the inauguration of the new organ at the Church of St. Vincent de Paul, on 23rsd Street, and was a success: “An organ of that power and perfection is a marvelous thing. Nothing is as handsome, solemn, majestic and brilliant, all at the same time, as those sounds furnished by thirty-four pipes [stops?], that is to say, giving thirty-four different tones, from the clarion to the human voice, combined with the inspiration and the hands of an artist who is familiar with all its resources. The new organ at the Church of St. Vincent de Paul [a French church] has only one flaw—that’s an excess of power, relative to the size of the building. The deep sounds get a bit muffled in hitting against the walls, between which they seem to feel ill at ease, and don’t let in enough air for the lighter motifs, which they smother. But this fault, if there is one, will become an asset when the church gets the extension that it should have, that is to say when it is extended to twenty-fourth street, and has the side aisles of a Greek cross. As for the rest, the performance was magnificent. With organists like Gomien, Berger, Dessane, Pecher and Greiner, you could look forward to an excellent artistic evening. The shade of Maître Wolfram would have trembled with gladness. The audience was numerous, and—what you scarcely would have believed after hearing two hours of enchanting organ music—without talking besides. That’s the greates eulogy you could make for the evening.”
