“To Philharmonic Rehearsal this aftn. and heard the Ninth Symphony, down to the Tempo di Marcia section of the Fourth Movement, and Spohr’s Jessonda. The overture is a beautiful piece of artistic work.  I do not see that it is anything more. The symphony grows on me every time I hear it, especially it’s most noble third movement-- serious rather than sad--quite matchless in its way. As to the Introduction to the 4th movement, it seems to me utterly vertiginous—flighty—daft—non compos—crack-brained, incoherent and bedlamitic.”
