Review: New York Herald, 14 December 1868, 4.

“’Geneviève de Brabant,’ at the French theatre, is attracting large audiences, consequent upon its announced withdrawal. Since its first representation ‘Geneviève’ has been the subject of great discussion, especially in reference to its cancan proclivities. Strange enough, however, the insinuations made against it have had little effect in deteriorating the large crowds who have hitherto attended its representations. That it has been placed upon the stage in a style worthy of any opera bouffe establishments in the world must certainly be admitted; and after all, its so-called double entendre cannot reasonably be said to excel that of any real opera bouffe that has yet been elsewhere presented. The truth is, they all have one tendency, and the distinction between them is insignificant. For the week Mr. Grau announces the continuation of ‘Genevieve,’ which is shortly to be substituted by something still more refreshing.”
