Review: New York Herald, 23 December 1868, 10.

The first performances of this piece had problems, but last night it went well.  Much attention is paid to stage effects and gorgeous scenery.  The costumes are new and beautiful.  The spectacles of the piece are executed with taste and skill.  Miss Fanny Prestige plays Aladdin, Mons. Leon Chenat plays Kasrac, Mr. J. Z. Little plays Abanazar, the magician, Mr. F. Chippendale and Walter Lennox play old Hyson and young Hyson.  The drama is not new, but it is the first time that it has been performed in America.  It is well suited for a Christmas-time piece because it combines pantomime, a good plot, excellent music, and beautiful scenery.  The house was crowded last night.  The court and cave scenes were particularly well received.  Miss Fanny Prestige was well received as Aladdin and was encored several times for her new songs, especially “Don’t Be Angry, Mother.”  Previous to Aladdin is the comedy of A Duchess or Nothing was played.  The principal parts were performed by Mrs. F. B. Conway (Susanne), Mr. F. B. Conway (Duc de Boisec), and Mr. W. Harris (Prince de Conti), it is enough to say that the audience was pleased.
