Two separate ensembles performed this concert: the Thomas Orchestra and an “orchestra” unnamed by the citations. Music in Gotham understands the second ensemble to be the Thomas Band. Both groups performed the Tannhäuser and Ernani fantasies, the “Indian March” from L’Africaine, and the “Hallelujah” chorus from Messiah.

“After a summer of unprecedentedly successful concerts Theodore Thomas will bring his garden concerts to a close on Saturday next. Last night this beautiful summer resort was crowded, and the programme well repaid the attendance. Wieprecht, Rossini, Flotow, Strauss, Weber, Wagner, Meyerbeer, Verdi, Handel, Hillbrecht, Schubert, Hatton and Offenbach supplied the music for the two orchestras (last night being a gala night), and the manner in which each selection was performed can be readily surmised from the well known reputation of Thomas’ unrivalled orchestra. The garden, which is now under the sole management of Mr. J. Goesche, will be refitted and prepared for the winter after this week, so that the promenaders can bid frost, snow and rain defiance beneath the new canopy which will shortly envelop its walks, and with the new heating apparatus which will diffuse in perpetual summer through its arbors. Then will come balls, grand concerts, soirées and parties, which will make it the favorite trysting place of pleasure seekers henceforth and for evermore.”
