Follows review for recent opera performance. “It is rumored that Mr. Max Maretzek will retire after the present season. The ridiculous reason assigned for this is that he is wealthy, when it is well known that he did not even retire, or think of doing so, when he was poor. In fact, Prime ministers, prima donnas and managers never retire. Sometimes they are put out in the cold, and at rare intervals they die. Mr. Maretzek is in the ermine of prosperity and as warm as toast. We have not heard him express a single wish to die. In view of opposition, too, he is additionally animated, and we therefore venture to predict that the rumor of his retirement is an is an airy fiction. Nevertheless, we shall bewail his loss at the bal d’opera on Easter Tuesday, with which impressive ceremony his career is supposed to terminate.”
