Review: New York Sun, 20 March 1869, 2.

“A committee from the audience is appointed to tie up the brothers, which they do as well as they know how, which usually is very bunglingly; then the doors are shut, and immediately the instruments begin to play, and the cabinet becomes a small pandemonium; hands are thrust out of the aperture in the front; bells are thrown out, the fiddle scrapes, the tambourine jingles, the bells ring, and when the disturbance is at the height the doors are thrown suddenly open, and the two brothers are discovered sitting bound as before, and as motionless as the statue of Memmon.”
