“Good Friday. . . Music at Tr. was in part utterly null dull, inane and without expression, and in part as sentimental, meretricious kaka dramatic and revolting as the vilest ‘Martyrdom’ ever painted in Paris. Yet our dense silicified John Bull of a Kapellmeister, W. Messiter holds Haydn and Mozart generally ‘too operatic,’ which is as if one should object to The Merchant of Venice as theatrical and devote his evenings to The Black Crook or Zenga, The Red Bandit of Bohemia. Vinton’s sermon matched the worse portion of the music.”
