“Offertory ‘Sleepers, Wake!’ (from Mendelssohn) felicitously chosen.  Sermon, and anthem, an inane production of Cutler’s were both insults to an assemblage presumed to possess common sense and able to distinguish real Music from Sham.

“Rev. Vinton with his $10,000 salary and allowance, is a positive dead weight upon the Parish. . . . As to our Kapellmeister, Mr. Messiter, I shall tell him that I mean to oppose any further appropriations of money to the musical expenses of Trinity, until he stops nauseating people with ‘Anthems by Cutler’ and vapidities of the same low grade! It’s no use spending money to improve the performance of worthless music. Rendered by the choir of the Sistine Chapel it would be worthless, just the same.”
