Brief. “At the theatres there will be no special novelties this week. At Niblo’s, however, the ‘Forty Thieves’ has been reconstructed, and new dialogues and incidents introduced.”
“The burlesque of the ‘Forty Thieves’ at Niblo’s has entered upon the second phase of its career. Last night it was reproduced, after a thorough rejuvenating process. New music, new dances and new songs served to stimulate the flagging appetite of the public; and a new performer in the person of Miss Clara Thompson, a relative of the golden-haired Lydia, added her charms to those of the other ladies engaged in the piece.” No further mention of music.
No mention of music. “…It may be desirable to leave out some of the new things, since the performance was not over till long after 11 o’clock, and we suggest that the drunkenness be omitted. It is not pleasant to think that while intoxication is sensibly growing into disfavor in real life, it is rapidly growing in popularity on the stage. The actor who assumed the disguise of inebriation last night was simply vulgar.”
“The Reconstructed ‘Forty Thieves’ will be presented at Niblo’s Garden this evening. The management announce that new scenery has been painted, new dresses made, and new songs, music, marches, tableaux, break downs and witticisms introduced, presenting it in a new dress altogether. Clara Thompson will make her first appearance in America on this occasion as Amber.”
