“Steinway and Irving halls were well filled last evening. The orchestral part of the programme at the former hall was the best we have heard for some time at these concerts. Schubert’s overture to ‘Rosamunde,’ one of Mozart’s singular Moorish pieces, a fantasia on ‘Robert,’ ‘Ruy Blas’ overture, an exquisite little work of Schumann, and Gounod [sic] ballet, ‘Reine de Saba.’ In the hands of Thomas’ orchestra all these pieces were in a congenial element, and received the attention due to them. The soloists were Miss Josey Hofle, who sang selections from the ‘Freyschutz’ and ‘Stradella’ very commendably, and Mr. August Arnold, pianist.” [Goes on to review concert at Irving Hall] "Mlle. Hoflé again appeared, as also Mr. August Arnold (pianist), who played, as one of his solos, Beethoven’s pianoforte Sonata in C-sharp minor, op. 27, which has been called, for some occult reason, the ‘Moonlight Sonata.’”
