“The whole town will probably be astonished, if not actually spellbound, to learn that the last nights of the veteran ‘Humpty Dumpty’ are announced. The announcement, however, does not positively state the exact time at which that aged, pale-faced individual is to be retired. He has worn out many scores of old metropolitan playgoers, and may yet see the rise and decline of another generation before he takes flight from the boards at the Olympic. Can it be that he is alarmed at the near approach of his dumb rival, ‘Robinson Crusoe,’ or is it possible that the ‘Seven Dwarfs’ at the Bowery proved one too many for him in his old age? ‘Humpty Dumpty’ has done nobly, however, and Saturday next will mark his 459th consecutive representation at the Olympic, the lognest run ever attained by any one piece in this country, and probably in the world.”
