“The People’s Garden—Great Outpouring of All Classes—Music—Nature—Natural History—Bass Ball and Croquet—The Elephant…

…[I]ndeed was the day a most beautiful one, tempting every human creature whom dire necessity did not chain to his somber walls to venture forth into the bright, balmy sunshine of nature and the people’s garden, the city’s Park, and enjoy a few hours relaxation from the cares and toils and burdens of life…

…Not less than 100,000, and probably a much larger number, visited the Park yesterday… [People] were there in almost countless numbers, covering every seat on the benches under and around the tents erected in the neighborhood of Dodworth’s pavilion to listen to the strains of his orchestra…

But, with the orchestra and all other attractions of the Park, the collection of specimens from the animal kingdom divided the attention of the people, and among these it was the huge elephant whom to see most people desired.” Goes on to describe the animal and what he ate all day.
