“From a theatrical stand-point the week that has just terminated has been one of remarkable dullness. No new pieces have been enacted, no new players have appeared, no change of performance of any moment has been made. The season when men’s amusement, like their bread, is earned by the sweat of their brow, is evidently commenced. As the mercury rises, the receipts of play-houses fall. At but one place of amusement in town is an exception offered to this rule. The Central Park Garden, we observe, prospers, while the temples of the drama are almost forsaken by their worshipers. Music attracts the dilettante and the influence of agreeable surroundings and cool breezes warrants a sojourn. The success of the nightly concerts increases with their number. That success we may add is legitimate in the strongest sense of the word. The programmes combine classical and popular music in correct proportions, and the talent of the interpreting artistes is of the highest order. Mr. J. Levy, the performer on the cornet-à-piston, is the prominent soloist. His celebrity, which extends over England and the Continent, is justified by the immense skill and taste in the use of an instrument over which few musicians obtain even a partial mastery. Mr. Levy’s execution of the three moreceaux he renders at each entertainment, with accompaniments supplied by Mr. Thomas’ orchestra, an organization remarkable in point of the personal worth of each of its members, are really the events of the concerts and cause tumultuous enthusiasm. With his coöperation the magnetic power of the Central Park Garden reunions will certainly not be decreased for many months. It will hardly be lessened this week, spite of the freshness of a few announcements now at hand.” Goes on to list different upcoming entertainments.
