“Alexander Young, front doorkeeper of the Old Bowery Theatre, died suddenly on May 24th, of hemorrhage of the lungs. He was 51 years of age, and was buried on Sunday, May 30th, with Masonic honors. Mr. Young was an Englishman by birth, and had been connected with the New York theatres for some years. He was with James Lingard at the New Bowery, and followed him to the Theatre Comique, Broadway, and afterwards went to the Old Bowery. He was widely known and highly esteemed.”
“The Bowery theatre [sic] still retains its time-honored prestige for dramatic excitement and novelty. Mr. W. H. Whalley, an old east side favorite, and Miss Rachel Denvil commence an engagement at this house this evening.” Announces benefit on Wednesday.
“To-day a matinee performance will be given at the Bowery theatre [sic] for the benefit of the widow of Alexander Young, formerly a popular attaché of this establishment. In addition to the regular company a number of volunteers have offered their services, and a light, merry and interesting performance will be given—a regular medley of drama, farce, acrobatic feats and dancing.”
