“Humane people are asking whether anything is going to be done to render the Stadt Theatre in the Bowery safe for the audience in case of fire or an alarm of fire. Three or four thousand panic-stricken men and women surging down a single staircase in frantic haste, and crowding through one long, narrow passage, could hardly hope to escape without leaving half their number either victims to the flames, or crushed and suffocated under the feet of the fortunate survivors.”
