“Another effort to establish a French theatre in this city is announced, a company of [illeg.] players having taken that dreary dungeon, the New York Theater, intending to open its ponderous and graphite jaws next Monday evening. The programme includes a one-act opera bouffe, entitled ‘Maitre Pathelin,’ a comedy and a vaudeville. Subscriptions to this enterprise have come in quite liberally, and it bids fair to succeed.”

“A performance of French comedy and opera bouffe will take place at the New-York Theatre, we observe, on Monday evening. This place has long been closed. Opera bouffe, if decent, and well done, ought to be attractive, even here. It is essentially merry; and of real merriment there is no imminent danger that we shall enjoy an excess.”

“The association of known French players, whose names have already had mention in this paper in connection with this very enterprise, open the New-York Theatre this evening, for a series of comedy, vaudeville, operette and opera bouffe entertainments. [Lists this program.] The representations of these foreign artists are so refreshing by their naturalness, as well as interesting by the literary worth of many parts of the repertory drawn from, that we cannot but give them special prominence and express a hope for their success.”

New York Theatre.—Last evening was the opening night at this theatre of the new French company, association of artists. Notwithstanding the terrible storm the house was well filled, and in the enjoyment of the very extraordinary programme outdoor discomforts were speedily forgotten. The vaudeville in one act of ‘Mlle. Bertrand and Mlle. Raton,’ the comedy of ‘Les Jurons de Cadillac,’ and the opèra bouffe in one act of ‘Matire Pathelin,’ were presented by an excellent company, including several favorites of former seasons. ‘Les Jurons de Cadillac’ was received with particular favor, and the entire company gave promise of a week of capital entertainment.”

“We cannot delay at present to deal minutely with the performances of the French comedians, at the New-York Theatre, but we can record the artistic success of their first entertainment. The opening representation of the season was given last night. Decidedly enjoyable, in spite of the imperfections of a first night, the pieces composing the programme were rendered with skill and spirit. ‘Les Jurons de Cadillac,’ the comedietta, had already been listened to by the frequenters of earlier soirées, but ‘Maître Pathelin,’ the comic opera, which is part of the modern repertory of the Opera Comique, was altogether fresh and charming, and the vaudeville of ‘M. Bertrand and Mlle. Raton,’ as droll a production as could be wished for. It will be an oft-recurring task, though a pleasant one, to keep a close record of the exertions made by the associate artists to secure a patronage their talent and labors entitle them to, but it is the intention of the players at the New-York Theatre to invite repeated notice by continual changes of programme. The bill, including the pieces named above, however, can be filed for future reference, as it will occupy the audiences again this week.”

The company of the associated artists at the New York Theatre have given several creditable performances this week. Although they comprise no star of special brilliancy, their representations are marked by the care and grace characteristic of French theatrical performers.”
