“Charley White, the veteran Ethiopean [sic] comedian and manager, has retired from the show world as manager and performer and gone into a new line of business for him, having purchased one half of the well known Florence saloon, south west corner of Broadway and Houston street, more popularly known as Mitchell’s, and, in conjunction with Cale Mitchell, will make this his headquarters. Charley White has been before the public as performer for twenty-six years, during which time he has introduced to the stage many performers at present enjoying a good reputation. He has also opened and managed quite a number of places of amusement, and organized various minstrel companies, and in his time has been manager of variety shows, minstrel troupes and legitimate theatres. Of late Charley has been rather unfortunate in his speculations, and has made very little if any money; but he is now in an established business, and with his partial retirement from the show world, he takes the good wishes of all, for he has hosts of friends, having, during his professional career, acted in a straightforward manner towards all, and his word has always been considered as good as his bond.”
