“At 5 ½ with Ellie, [Trenkholm?] and Murray Hoffman, to ‘sunset Service’ at the grand new Synagogue of the Reformed, Porkophagous, or porcivorous Jews—5th Ave.—interior glowing and gorgeous with gold and color, arabesque wood carvings and columns of polished Syenite. Congregation thin. Service polyglot, Hebrew, German, and English alternately, and mostly choral. Fine choir, with sundry good soli. All the music respectable. As a finale, we were astounded by the splendid Gloria of Haydn’s No. 2, followed by the Qui Tollis and all the rest, adpted to German words (not a translation, of course) and effectively rendered.”
