“Choruses from Oberon. Credo, fugue, Sanctus from Mozart No. 12. Enjoyed it heartily. Attendance larger than it was last Tuesday…Certain passages in that grand fugue are amazing. They manifest Mozart’s power of producing the loftiest and noblest expression, when tied down by the strictest conventional laws of counterpoint. The Et Incarnatus, Qui Tollis, &c were easy work compared with this.”
“Dr. [Frederick A. P.] Barnard [President of Columbia] is funny. His deafness impairs his intonation. He said ‘that rehearsal last Tuesday was delightful. Who was that wobbler who sat on the right side of the platform?’ ‘That wobbler?’ I asked. ‘Yes, that wobbling young lady who sang something from Oberon.’ Then it occurred to me that the Rev. Barnard meant to say ‘Warbler’ & to indicate Miss Fanny [Reed], who had hummed over a few phrases from Reiza’s music.”
