Notes Tayleure’s plans for the Théâtre Français; mostly describes scenery he has planned for the performance of London; or, Life in the capital.
“Mr. Tayleure has other and more elaborate projects on foot. He has taken the French Theatre for a few months, and in the intervals of English and German opera will give there a series of dramatic representations. Mr. Chanfrau will be one of the stars, and a new play of London life, with scenery of an unusual character, will be one of the attractions. It is also stated that Mr. Tayleure is about building a first-class theatre in Brooklyn.”
“The Théâtre Français, after its long somnolency [sic], has suddenly awakened into a new and brighter life. The present season of English opera, under Mme. Rosa’s able direction, is proving a decided success. After the opera comes Manager Tayleure, with a strong company, for a short season of dramatic representations, after which Mr. Wertheimber, who is at present seeking talent in Europe, will favor us with a four or six weeks’ season of grand German opera, which will be interlarded with French comedy. In December Mr. Tayleure will commence a second dramatic season at the Théâtre Français, having taken a five months’ lease of the theatre for that purpose. Mr. Grau, who has quietly made all these arrangements while his professional friends thought him asleep, will leave for Europe in October, for the purpose of seeing and hearing certain celebrities, with whom he is even now negotiating, with the view of bringing them to this country.”
