The New York Herald published a review for this performance on 09/22/69, though the event had not even yet been officially included in its advertisement cards. Two days later that paper announced that what had taken place was only a rehearsal, and that the actual performance would follow on 09/28/69. (See also event entry of 09/21/69: Rehearsal of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.) The orchestra was comprised of “eighty soloists.”

“The ‘Order of Elks,’ a benevolent organization, comprising over 400 members of the minstrel profession, gave their annual matinée performance at the Academy o’ Music yesterday afternoon, upon which occasion the company from Bryant’s [sic] Minstrels, San Francisco Minstrels and Tony Pastor’s Opera House appeared in a round of their Ethiopian eccentricities.”

“A gentleman from the ‘Interior’ has sent a note to ‘Our Jim,’ asking him whether the ‘Benevolent Order of Elks’ derive their name from the number of ‘horns’ taken by its members. Jim, in reply, says he thinks not, because they have only taken one horn since he joined ’em, and that one was Eph. Horn; but he think they get the name from the large quantity of ‘buck’ beer they consume. This, we fear, may be a bitter dose for the benevolent ones to swallow.”
