“The fourth annual ball of Metropolitan Chapter, No. 140, R. A. M., came off last night at Apollo Hall. It may be regarded as the opening ball of the Masonic fraternity this season, and the arrangements were accordingly of a most expensive and elaborate order. The hall itself has undergone great improvements, being handsomely frescoed and adorned with fine paintings. The music was rendered by Theodore Thomas’ orchestra. At ten o’clock the grand march commenced, headed by M. E. Comp. L. Teichman and e. Comp. B. Croner, and while the procession was passing in a serpentine, ever varying, but steady course, the scene was enchanting. Indeed, Metropolitan Chapter has achieved a reputation for the grandeur of its annual balls which other lodges may well envy. The toilet of the ladies was rich, yet divested of everything approaching to gaudiness or extravagance. The whole affair was carried out with such harmony that it resembled a family entertainment. The familiar faces of M. Lichtenstein, Joseph Schneider, Charles Fagan, M. Greenspecht, J. Wolf and J. Stricker reflected a warmth on the proceedings that made everyone feel quite at home. For genuine good cheer and ample magnificence in display the ball may be equaled, but certainly not surpassed.”
