Cosmopolitan Hall Opening

“The Cosmopolitan Hall, a large and beautiful concert-room, was opened for the first time on Saturday evening. It is situated on Third-ave., between Fifteenth NS Sixteenth-sts., and was erected at a great cost by Messrs. Joseph G. Browning and Jacob W. Moore. The entire depth of the building is 156 feet, with a frontage on Third-ave. of 52 feet and one on Sixteenth-st. of 46 feet. A large portico extends along the Third-ave. side supported by six massive columns. The hall is divided into two saloons, one 52x60 feet and the other 74x60 feet. The decorations are very rich and tasteful. In the first saloon there is a gallery 10 feet in width which surrounds the entire room. Two large cupolas and several side windows give a sufficiency of light and ventilation. Adjoining the gallery on the Third-ave. side is a large restaurant 52x40 feet, which may also be reached by a wide staircase in the front of the building. In addition to this there are several private supper-rooms on the floor above. The entire building is to be well lighted in the evening, there being a large number of chandeliers and gas jets. The furniture is all of black walnut, and the floors of the dining rooms covered with tapestry carpets. The walls are painted blue and white, and present a very chaste appearance. The accomodations down stairs consist of bar room, cigar stand, lunch bars, kitchen, wine vanity, etc. The hall throughout presents a very handsome appearance, and is one of the most commodious buildings of the kind in the city. Its proportions reflect no little credit on Gen. Louis Burger, who was the architect. Mr. Casper [illeg.] the steward of the Union League Club, the [illeg.], and Delmonico’s will be the Superintendent. Mr. Carl Anschutz will lead the large orchestra, which he has specially engaged.”
