“Last night was the close of the grand Christmas festival which was held for two weeks past at this beautiful garden. The weather interfered considerably with the attendance during this fête of Santa Claus, but when ever there was a gleam of fair skies the ladies and children flocked to the garden in numbers. A variety of entertainments was given, among them an automatic theatre, rope dancing by Mlle. Marietta Zanfretta, performing dogs, trapeze artists and a good selection of music by Thomas’ orchestra. A fair, or bazaar, and clowns and a comic singer were among the other features. The hall is beautifully decorated and the summer garden enclosed and well heated. Were such a garden further down town, so that the weather might not interfere with its attendance, there would be few places of amusement in this city to rival its attractions.”
