“Berthold overture--overture to Oberon & most of the Oberon music set down for this concert. Full attendance. Most of the people were people I know. Performance much commended. It has its weak points. The orchestra (62) a little too strong for the voices, except when both are fortissimo. Miss Fanny Reed did her part beautifully, & the other soli suffered a little from stage fright & the novelty of singing against so heavy an orchestra. The orchestral work is lovely, and was well done, especially as Oberon was (all but the overture) absolutely new to the orchestra. Both overtures well rendered--Oberon very well. Ellie came away in a despairing mood, and so did the Mus: Doc. [James Pech], but he came in at dinner time & they talked each other into a much more hopeful frame. Nine-tenths of a New York audience are unable to detect the shortcomings of the performance.”
