“A good entertainment was presented at the Theatre Comique the past week. Emma Marsh and Josephine did the ‘Pas Styrien’ very nicely, while the singing of Alma Monkesson was much enjoyed. The lady possesses a good voice and knows how to use it. She received two encores. The ‘Hibernian Lilt’ by the Schroter Sisters is deserving of mention. Dick Ralph’s song and dances take well, for he was encored four times. Hughey Dougherty gave his stump speech in his usual quaint way and kept his audience in roars of laughter all the time. As a stump ‘speechist’ Hughey is a great success, and, probably, has no superior in the business. George Coes has become one of the greatest favorites that has yet appeared at this establishment. His singing, as well as his banjo playing, are greatly admired. He sang, the past week, ‘Driven from Home,’ a ballad that has become very popular, and which he sang in such a manner as to receive the heartiest kind of applause. His singing of ‘McGregor’s Gathering’ was also very good. The ballet at this establishment is one of the best, if not the best, to be found in any variety hall in this country. Venturoli is a premier of the French school, and is as elastic as a piece of rubber, and as light as a fairy. Her pirouettes are startling. Augusta is another very pleasing premier, who is as quick as one could be, and quite graceful in her movements. She excels in her toe movements. Mlle. Catania is another pleasing danseuse. The corps de ballet is a most excellent one and Grossi’s ballets are all pleasing. Master Barney appeared in Dutch songs, giving an imitation of Annie Hindle and he sang ‘Up in that Saloon,’ to the air of ‘Up in That Back Room,’ for which he received an encore. Mlle. Leah did the skipping rope dance very well.”
