“Then came a waif from Strauss, ‘The Banks of the Danube,’ melodies which intoxicate and steal the feeling if not senses away. The huge mass of parti-colored masks heaved and undulated like the ocean billows in the rays of the setting sun, and three hundred couples were spinning around to the measures of the enchanting music. The frothy nonsense of Offenbach, like champagne, exhilarated the flushed dancers and robbed the boxes of many of their fairest occupants. Again came one of Lanner’s maddening galops, and the ever changing hues of the floor costumes became electric in their flashing evolutions.”
